Jolan L. Smith, 71 NORWAY -- Jolan L. Smith, 71, of Norway, was promoted to Glory on July 7, 2009. She was born in Berlin, Germany on Dec. 18, 1937, the daughter of Gertruda Baumgart. She attended Heidelberg School of Nursing. She had been employed at Fairchild Semiconductor in Portland and had been a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of the Salvation Army in Old Orchard Beach, a proud member of the home league. She enjoyed working with people and taking care of the sick. She also enjoyed coin collecting with her husband. She is survived by her husband Daniel Smith of Norway; five stepchildren, Daniel, III, Robert, Evelyn, Mary Kay and Katherine; several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 13, at 1 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 6 Sixth St., Old Orchard Beach. Interment will be at Blackpoint Cemetery in Scarborough at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared with her family at www.westonchandler.com.

4th of July!

PORTLAND: The Declaration of Independence will be read by historian Herb Adams at noon at the Maine Historical Society, 487 Congress St. 774-1822; www.mainehistory.org. Fireworks begin around 9:15 p.m. at Eastern Promenade Park courtesy of Fireworks by Grucci, the company that did the fireworks at the Olympic Games in China in 2008. Access to Munjoy Hill and the Eastern Promenade by car will be closed at 6 p.m. Public restrooms will be available at East End Beach, Turner Street and Cutter Street. Food and drink will be sold. The rain date is Sunday. 756-8130.
